Not a coincidence. At the time that song was recorded, Gram Parsons was spending a lot of time with the Stones, teaching them about country music including Ralph Stanley. The many country songs on the albums, “Beggar’s Banquet” and “Let It Bleed”, are due to Gram’s influence.
-
They also recorded a song called “Midnight Rambler” – the Stanley’s did “Midnight Ramble”.
Call me Kookoo, but when I hear these guys harmonize, I hear the roots of the Rolling sTones doing Honky Tonk Women. I know the Roling Stoones can’t hold an actual candle to these actual men but ’twas the stownes that got me into the Stanley Brothers ’cause ‘a that vocal harmonizin’.
As I sit hear wtitin’ this I gots a signed picutre of dr. Ralph STanly attached over my computer screean. Which is signed to me and I got it in Davis, California about 20 years ago and that was a good show, too.
How can you say these guys aren’t good looking…..just that fashion and hairstyles have changed…..Carter looks a lot like Robert Mitchum one of the leading actors of the post WWII era
One of my favorite things is DJing autobiogtraphies and biographies for myself and friends… looking up the songs and films I’m reading about. It takes me all sorts of interesting places. I’m looking up Rank Strangers by the Stanley Bros. because of Crooked Still’s article in American Songwriter… they’re featured songwriter this week, and mentioned the song as one of their all-time favorites in any genre. Thanks for posting!
@impala327 BanjoBoyMatteo reported earlier that this footage was shot in Germany ,1966, just before Carter’s death. They would have no say whayever in the decor, and I’m sure they were glad to get a good paying gig. They certainly played in a lot worse spots. Ignore the setting, just listen to the superb music.
@impala327 :>) Oh I wasn’t jumpin on you. I guess they were on the Grand Ole Opry or something to that effect. I thought it was an interesting contrast too. lol
There is a great article in The Fretboard Journal…where Rickey Skaggs talks about how when he herd the Beatles he said they were great but not as good as the Stanley Brothers…..Actually both groups have very similar styles of intertwining their harmony singing and very brief but tasty lead guitar parts…
@adamtheham George Shuffler
anyone know who the other guitar pic’r is?
Haaaa. Lord.
Happy 85th birthday Carter.
@DirkJefferson Thanks for spreading the Good Word of Gram Parsons.
Thank you for posting this. Seeing Carter and Ralph on the same stage is awesome. Rank strangers is one of the best songs ever written.
This is a great tune! Ricky Scaggs does a very good version.

@SteveGaines Yep, you are right.
@pekoe67 Why in the world do you say that?

Cool. I shouldn’t be harsh on the scene. It was what it was.

Absolutey. I was referring to the stage decor. The band is sharp but the background is cliche hick. They were as sharp as Miles.
@impala327 Wouldn’t you wear your best if you were visiting someone?

Whats that supposed to mean
Listen to how they sing “rank”. Damb.
No wonder the video got over 60,000 views with musicains like these!!!!!!!!!
@pekoe67 There are still plenty of ugly men playing good music. It’s much more rewarding to find them these days!
